Pinellas County Housing Authority Honored with Two Housing Awards
At the Florida Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (FAHRO) 2018 Annual Convention held earlier this month, the Pinellas County Housing Authority (PCHA) received not one, but two housing awards! First, for their “Get Ready” Initiative, PCHA received a 2018 Best Practices Award by assisting families toward the goal of homeownership. Second, in honor and recognition of their website’s exceptional content and design, PCHA received the 2018 Website Award.
PCHA realized that the only way to house more families in public housing was to find a way for the families that were on the verge of doing better financially, who could really use encouragement- and if given that encouragement and the tools, they could successfully meet the goal of obtaining homeownership. The result would vacate a public housing unit for another family in need, and for them, build equity towards their long-term success.
As a way of working toward providing families the encouragement and information about “How to get started” toward the goal of owning their own home, PCHA put together the “Get Ready” Initiative in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Pinellas.
One of the most important benefits to this program is for families who never thought it would be possible that they could own a home of their own, now feel the hope, and know the steps they need to take to get there.
